A Kingdom Perspective
The campaigns are over. The ballots have been cast.
In most cases the races have been decided. Winners have celebrated victory while losers have for the most part graciously conceded defeat. Some are envisioning a new direction for the country while others are lamenting a path to renewed lows. It’s probably a good idea then after this and every election for believers to recall and reflect on some transcendent truths so we can put this and any election in proper perspective.
This past Sunday we learned that God’s kingdom is even now on the move and will eventually grow to enfold the entire universe (Matt. 13:31-32). Believers participate in this kingdom through the new birth which initiates a personal transformation of our nature, character, ways of thinking and eventually lifestyle. Our permanent, eternal kingdom grows within and among the temporary kingdoms of this world including the temporary realm of the United States of America. With that said here are few things to keep in mind as we continue to spread the gospel of the kingdom.
Believers who’ve chosen to be republican should not be too discouraged from the election results. The Scriptures teach that the kingdom of God grows through the power of God by the proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ apart from man manipulated political power. Our task, mission and calling is not the preservation of American military, political and economic dominance but to call individual Americans to faith in Jesus Christ. In relation to the government we are to advocate for the poor, powerless and marginalized and pursue the peace and overall well-being of the communities, cities and country in which God has placed us. Above all we are not to disparage, disrespect or belittle our newly elected leaders or those who voted for them. Though we engage in vigorous debate with those who differ with our positions on taxes, the war in Iraq, abortion and other issues let’s remember that the cause of the gospel is best served when we treat all people with the dignity, respect and consideration that befits humans created in God’s image.
I would give the same wisdom to those believes who’ve chosen to be democrats.
Don’t be deceived into thinking that just because the democrats have regained power that the manifestation of the kingdom is just around the corner. While we all must work with our elected officials for safer, better communities believers recognized that true, lasting well being can’t be legislated. Our communities won’t turn around automatically just because the democrats now run part of the show. Like our republican brothers and sisters we still have the privilege and responsibility to promote the gospel of the eternal kingdom to those who live and work around us. In a similar way we must treat all people with respect, kindness and dignity. We can certainly disagree on issues like gun control, a living wage, taxes and the war while being charitable and considerate.
Finally dearly loved ones in Christ give praise to God that whoever wields power now, in 2008 or in 2028 the kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ will continue to grow until the multitudes of the universe surround His throne in thunderous praise and worship. Praise God that no matter whose in power you can and most definitely should be in church this Sunday to praise the living Lord, Jesus Christ. Praise God that those who control the legislature cannot control the hearts of men and women. We can freely proclaim the gospel of Christ and experience the transformation of individuals, families, communities and cities. Praise God that we the subjects of the eternal kingdom can use our resources, time and talent to pursue the righteousness, justice, peace and joy that flows from the kingdom.
Praise God that our hope isn’t in who controls the congress, white house or state house. We pledge undying allegiance not to a temporary power destined to fall like all others have, but to Jesus Christ our living Lord, Lamb, good Shepherd and great King.
To Him Who Loves Us…
